A Beautiful Wedding Surprise: Colin & Sandra’s Methven Tartan Story
At Strathmore Woollen Co., we’re always honoured to play a role in our customers’ most special life moments.
Earlier this year, we had the unique privilege of creating something truly unforgettable for Sandra and Colin's wedding.

The celebration was held at the picturesque Blackwell Grange Hotel, a perfect setting for a day full of love, family, and tradition. What made this wedding even more special for us? We were entrusted with a very meaningful and top-secret project that would leave the groom speechless.
Colin’s family reached out to us for a bespoke weave of the Methven Tartan, a tartan with deep sentimental value to the family. This wasn’t just about creating a beautiful piece of fabric—it was about weaving family heritage into one of the most important days of their lives.
Along with the custom-woven tartan, we also had the pleasure of crafting the kilts and accessories for the entire wedding party. But here’s the twist—Colin had absolutely no idea about ANY of it! With his family and friends in on the surprise, we even managed to take his kilt measurements in secret, ensuring he remained completely out of the loop. It definitely helps to have an identical twin brother!
On the morning of the wedding, Colin was presented with his bespoke Methven Tartan Kilt and matching accessories for the very first time. We can only imagine the look of surprise and joy on his face making all the effort worthwhile. It was truly a moment to remember—a perfect start to a day filled with love and tradition.
The whole wedding party were kitted out with the beautiful Tartan in Kilts, Ties, Shawls and more to make their day truly unique. A story that is sure to be retold for generations to come.
We are beyond proud to have been part of Sandra and Colin’s wedding journey, helping to weave a personal touch of heritage into their big day. It’s projects like this that remind us of the true meaning of our craft—creating more than just kilts and tartans, but lifelong memories.

A Message from the happy Couple...
Eighteen months before Sandra and I were due to get married, Jamie told me he had a surprise in mind for my wedding gift. I could not have imagined this surprise would involve a year-long, secret collaboration with renowned weaver, Strathmore Woollen, to produce a new batch of the Methven tartan just for my wedding day. This wasn’t just any tartan. It was one with deep personal significance. The Methven tartan was commissioned in 2015 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of Methven, the small village where we grew up. We loved the tartan’s unique design and its connection to our roots, and we had looked into getting some trews made when it was first released. But when we found out the limited batch of the weave had already sold out, we let the idea go, thinking the opportunity had passed.
Little did I know that eight years later I would be presented with a stunning collection of bespoke kilts, ties, shawls, flashes, and even a ring pillow, for my wedding day. The quality of the pieces was just outstanding, and the colours of the tartan complimented the venue beautifully. What was even more special was sharing these pieces with Sandra’s family, who had travelled from America for the wedding. It felt like we were sharing a piece of our Scottish heritage that united both families in a unique way. They had such an admiration for not just the craftsmanship, but the history and significance behind the pieces. It’s hard to put into words how much this gift meant to me. Thanks to Jamie, a few close family members who were in on the secret, and everyone at Strathmore Woollen, I will feel the connection to my home and my heritage every time I wear my kilt, no matter where I am in the world. That’s a truly wonderful gift!
