At Strathmore Woollen Company, we are passionate about the rich cultural heritage of the Angus region.
We are thrilled to share our involvement in a series of exhibitions in partnership with local historical museums such as Meffan Museum and Glenesk Folk Museum, in collaboration with Piping Routes. The exhibitions are focused on the time-honoured crafts that are integral to the fabric of our community – kiltmaking, weaving and pipe bands.
Piping Routes and the Meffan Museum
Earlier this year, we partnered with Piping Routes to bring an engaging and local exhibition to life.
Piping Routes is a community interest organisation that works tirelessly to promote pipe bands to the next generation. The exhibition has been curated to showcase the skilled work, dedication and community aspect there is to being involved in a pipe band.
The organisation aims to protect the much loved tradition of Pipe Bands that is celebrated around the world.
Strathmore Woollen Co has kitted out many a pipe band over the years, and still do to this day! The link between Piping Routes and Strathmore was a natural one and made for an enriched exhibition in the local setting of the Meffan Museum, Forfar.
The Partnership Continues with the Glenesk Folk Museum
Strathmore Woollen Co and Piping Routes have partnered up once again to continue to promote craft in the Angus area. With the help of the wonderful team of volunteers at the Glenesk Folk Museum, the Piping Routes exhibition has been re-erected, with the Strathmore section being given a new focus on promoting both weaving and traditional kilt making.
Glenesk Folk Museum, with its rich collection of local artifacts and its mission to preserve the area’s rural heritage, offers the perfect backdrop for this celebration of Angus craftsmanship.
The exhibition features a, believed to be, 180 year old Wilson’s of Bannockburn pattern book. The book includes over 50 samples of original Wilson’s of Bannockburn cloth samples in 100% wool, including the only sample of the ‘Gipsey’ tartan (in wool) discovered to date.
More to come on this soon…
Promoting Heritage Crafts in Angus
Through these exhibitions, we aim to bring greater awareness to the heritage crafts that continue to thrive in Angus. At Strathmore Woollen Company, we believe in the importance of keeping these traditions alive, not only as a tribute to our past but as a vital part of our community’s future.
We invite you to visit the Glenesk Folk Museum to view the current exhibition and marvel at the wonders and curios of ‘Life in the Glen’.
As we continue to work with local institutions and artisans, we are excited to share our passion for textiles and craftsmanship with the wider community. Together, we can ensure that these invaluable traditions are passed down to future generations, preserving the cultural legacy of Angus, and Scotland, for years to come.
