Our 180-Year-Old Tartan Book on Display at Glenesk Folk Museum
We’re thrilled to announce that our cherished ‘Big Book of Tartan’ is now proudly displayed in the Glenesk Folk Museum, known fondly as the ‘Gem in the Glen.’ This remarkable artifact, which has been quietly sitting in our office for years, holds a significant place in tartan history, and we’re excited to share its story with you.
For many years, the origins and details of this book remained a mystery to us. However, thanks to the expertise of Peter MacDonald, a renowned Tartan Historian, we now have a wealth of information about this incredible piece of Scottish heritage. Recently, Peter had the opportunity to examine the book at the Glenesk Folk Museum, shedding light on its fascinating history.
"The 'Big Book of Tartan' is impressive not just in scale but also in its contents."
It is believed to hold 52 original samples of Wilsons of Bannockburn cloth, each measuring approximately 25 inches wide. These tartan samples are thought to have been woven or curated in the 1840s, making the book an extraordinary artifact from that era. In many ways, this book served as an early version of what we would consider a swatch book today—a beautiful display of the vibrant and intricate tartans that have become synonymous with Scottish culture.
Among its treasures, the book also holds something truly unique: the only known specimen of the Wilson of Bannockburn ‘Gypsy’ Tartan. This rare piece of history makes the book even more special, and we’re honoured to be able to share it with the public.
We invite you to visit the Glenesk Folk Museum and experience this piece of history for yourself. The ‘Big Book of Tartan’ is currently on loan from our collection and is part of the museum’s current exhibition.
